I'm gonna reach!
I'm gonna strive!
Will get release!
Because I'm gonna fly!
I'm gonna fly!

I feel the truth,
of the real me inside!
Let it all out!
I am ready to fly!
I am ready to fly!

Returning back to
the way things ought to be!
I feel my wings!
Returning to me!
I am ready to fly!

And, I will reach!
Here! As I strive!
Will get release!
because I'm gonna fly!
I'm gonna fly!

Returning back to
the way things should seem!
I'll leave the rest behind,
Where my tail ought to be!
I feel my wings!
They are returning to me!

Now I shall reach!
Now as I strive!
Will get release!
Because I'm gonna fly!

I am ready to fly!
I am ready to fly!
I am ready to fly!
I am ready to fly!

Fly......

NOTES:

* This song is intended for Djehkäujaa. this song is the scene(s) starting BEFORE she gets to the zeppelin. It's a bit of a fake-out. She feels called (sensory feeling) back to the dragons again, and she's also very gifted with singing and music which she's utilized to her advantage among the human world, in her humanoid form. She thinks she's being called back permanently to become her dragon form again and be pardoned from exile.

Also, she feels her wings are going to come back (which they will). But, she has to board the airship to get into the right location.

Actually, by the end of the song, she just arrives at the zeppelin... and boards it... she won't fly until the following song.

It's somewhat funny, because she's been solemn, broody, moody, and EMO up until she thinks she's coming back. So, she gets all animated, chipper, swaggering, and struts throughout the city on foot belting out the song. Like: Bye bitches! I'm free!
(Except she's not actually permanently being called back... it was just to make her return, to check in briefly, only to cast her back, because they're not satisfied with her still... It really smacks her down several more notches emotionally... also, they don't think her exile was long enough for what "crime" they deemed she committed... )

* This song just came to me, today, first in spurts at the gym, then once I took a shower it came even stronger... I waited to long to jot it down and record it, so I had to try and remember it again, and it took a while.

It definitely needs work, I'm NOT a professional musician, composer, or song writer; I only studied classical music as a child (chorus, violin, recorder, and guitar basics). I often regret not doing more with it because I really loved it.

I want this to be a 4/4 beats song, very uptempo, and Hi-NRG Eurodance techno 1990s style. But, I think it kinda came out sounding like a waltz 6/8 beats... sorta...  :-/ Gotta change that...  Like I've said before, I would like her vocals to be something like the late Melanie Thornton, or something similar.

Djehkäujaa Doodles Update

Just a little update on this one...

It's not the best ever sketches of my existence, but I figured I'd post this anyways. Gotta keep practicing.

Very, very 1990s vibe. I have several concept clothing designs for Djehkäujaa. She can vary from bare minimal & practical to flashy depending on her mood. She tends to go more flashy with her shoes, because she has a shoe collecting fetish. However, as a humanoid she mostly doesn't understand human fashion and can wear wrong clothing choices for situations not appropriate for various situations, and doesn't understand why.

Lively, tends to be way more flashy, but can easily get practical if she has something important to do, that's messy, or dirty.

Djehkäujaa Singing Song Fragment via Snapchat

I did some rough doodles of Djehkäujaa today since the weather got cold (yes it's JULY) and my internet is NOT working correctly!

Here's The Rough sketches:

Then on Snapchat, they have a feature that allows you to superimpose a facial image over your face. SO, I accidentally tapped it, and it automatically put Djehkäujaa there! I actually really liked it, so I did a rendition of her singing the dragon song I wrote for her in my story/film/motion-picture.

The original demos of the song (my vocals):

I don't particularly care for my vocal for Djehkäujaa. I think my vocal is more for Lively than her.

Actually, I would prefer a vocal more like the beloved late Melanie Thornton or Melodie Sexton. I also like Rozalla.

Sketching Croquis & Improving Sketching

I've been doing quick poses gesture drawing life sketches from Croquis Cafe the free online video classes on YouTube. (Thank you, Croquis cafe & all the supporters & funders!)

Since I've started doing them starting back in May this year, I've actually noticed an improvement with my linework in my own personal artwork.

Here's one of my Djehkäujaa sketches BEFORE I started doing croquis sketches:

Then, here's the same sketch I went back to and worked on a bit:

Here's an Example of Some of the croquis I did:

1 Min Sketches:

2 Min Pose Sketches:

I'm still feeling frustrated with my skills. Back in 2001 and for several years after, i could actually draw a whole figure in forms & shapes in 30 seconds, and also draw live people and animals as they were moving.

I do, still, appreciate the kind words of encouragement people have given to me. But, I'm still unsatisfied. But, I have been improving. I often need to compete with my living room to use the easel to sketch from the Croquis Cafe YouTube class on my TV, because my spouse is also doing a lot of painting and sketching, and working on improving his portfolio.

But, You can see that by sticking to it, there's an improvement.

I want to enhance & improve my mental imagery ability to visualize the images & forms inside my mind like I used to have.

I don't sketch quite as much, nor as often, as I would like. There's been several things that came up like several: doctor's appointments, my daughter's birthday, going to the gym, going to University Orientation in Boston, going back to Boston multiple times to fix errors they caused.

I want to work more on developing my characters and work on my story, but I still need to improve my skills. SO, I'm headed in THAT direction.

Djehkäujaa Inspiration at The Gym

Often, when I go to the gym, I find tons of ideas flood me! Or, also when I'm out taking a walk... since we often had good weather off & on, EXTREMELY OFF AND ON AGAIN, I would go walk among nature at South Field (Mass) and be among nature, and trees. Shea Field is kinda zen for me... But, I've been all over that place!

But, lately, its when I go to the gym. I keep getting floods of visuals for scenes in my mind!

There was a REALLY great scene I kept getting, overwhelmingly, that I often would black out, and forgot I was on a treadmill.

But, when I would sit down to try and sketch it out, I was often frustrated with my skills... which is why I'm doing a lot of croquis lately.

Actually, this scene is quite beautiful. It involves a window... and a lot of music... this film keeps wanting to be musical! Like, YOU HAVE NO IDEA! I often can HEAR IT. But, this song I couldn't really hear... it was not really connecting with me in audio... but, the visuals were there.

And, it was also developing quite a bit of Djehkäujaa's story and character, herself!

Apparently, Djehkäujaa is very much a night-life person... But, what did ya expect from a DRAGON that hangs out with OWLS? Am I right???

It's funny, because Djehkäujaa in her humanoid form is often sullen, stoic, and stern... but, when the music is playing, she's kind like a Goth chick! You know the type! The music starts playing on the dance floor, and they;re all emotive, passionate, expressive, artistic, expressive!
But, Djehkäujaa could never really be a Neo-Goth. She likes COLORFUL THINGS, and a flashy SHOE collecting fetish, and likes shiny clothes. Especially colorful ones!

I had a whole small story about Djehkäujaa's night-life, life, backstory stuff that was actually really good. But, I could also cut it out of a feature film version without it hurting the flow of the story. I like the idea of various versions of the story that's cut, or re-cut.

It actually has a very MTV music video cut to it... yet, still telling the story with music, song lyrics, and video... Altho' I haven't actually written any lyrics for it yet.

Djehkäujaa is also VERY MUSICAL. VERY
It's a DRAGON THING.

Oh, and here's a doodle... still working on developing Ao Xingtao.... still working on it...

he'll get there eventually...

But, I will say this. Even tho' Ao Xingtao and Djehkäujaa have some unexpected dragon ties in the story, THEY WILL NOT HOOK UP.

I also DO NOT want them to look alike.

I kept getting frustrated over trying to develop him last month, and the sketches looking too much like her.

Djehkäujaa Humanoid Zeppelin Vintage Storyboards Concepts 002

Djehkäujaa Humanoid Zeppelin Vintage Storyboards Concepts 002

Like I've said, these are not the greatest storyboards. they also don't "flow" "correctly"... plus, my inking skills are terrible.

I had to ink these to shove them into my portfolio, to graduate, only to have them pulled and re-inserted, and pulled out multiple times by jerk, sexist instructors.

back then, inking was the rule... but, also, back then, storyboards were almost entirely done in blue pencil... I don't know whether that's still done today, but it's maddening. Blue is often non-repro and won't scan very well, because scanners and photocopiers have trouble seeing it. they also fade really fast, unlike red pencils which last.

This is my FAVORITE PART of the entire film/story!

This concept is pretty old, and I first started it in 1998. As you can see the 2 sketches above which I drew in Lewes Delaware after I came back to the USA from Germany, but I first dreamed it up around June-July when I was graduating high school in NJ, and then went strait into my Animation Scholarship Summer program at the UARTS in Philadelphia. I actually sketched this on the square, hard covered sketch-books they gave us from the UARTS. I actually started these sketches in Philly, probably in July, but never finished them until August... looks like a few days before I turned 19.

I was supposed to start at AIPH that week, but they screwed up my paperwork and I couldn't start until January... (the story of my life... always delays... and someone screwing something up...)

I actually drew up these rough storyboards/concepts on my own, and not as a school project... but, I had to shove them into being a project, kinda, at portfolio time... hence the reason why they are inked... and I HATE the inking!

Or course I would LOVE to redo them, eventually... however, I don't have the music composed for it yet. I think I will actually incorporate 2 songs here.

The first little song bit will be short and light, probably THIS SONG [demo]:

But, HERE are the Lyrics I WROTE for the song I want her to sing.

There's another part after this which I just haven't even storyboarded.

She will briefly meet back up with her dragon pack/flock and it will be a musical dramatic piece, and they will all part. they do all mutually miss her, but she isn't allowed to return yet.

That actually is what really shifts her to be motivated to do the right thing she believes in, and really becomes determined.

However, since the dragons reproached her and caused this, the direction she goes in actually puts a spotlight on her, which goes against their other fundamentalist ideas... So, they will try to lure her back... they'd originally intended it to be punitive and judged her as "not ready to return yet" because she was supposed to be "learning a lesson"... however, she actually learns far beyond their mental framework of thinking, and overcomes that...

They try to stop her from getting involved, and even welcome her back to distract her... but, she evolves beyond it, and sees past the extremes of what was originally meant to be safety and concern, and became stifling. After that, she will be able to shape-shift on her own.

Then, She and Lively can confront the main villain/antagonist.

I want the music to have a distinctly 90s European techno 4/4 beats sound/feel/vibe, but somewhat like a ballad.

I'm not sure whom I would pick to be the singing voice... I would probably want someone whom could sing like the late Melanie Thornton, may she rest in peace.

Love you and miss you Melanie!

Djehkäujaa Dragon Vintage Storyboards Concepts 001

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

I've finally scanned these old vintage storyboards I did. I did these back when i was in college. the scene ideas had already been in my mind since about 1998, but they really started to become something in 1999 when I was in college in Philadelphia full time.

I learned a lot from an animation teacher, Sam, whom got fired.

Unfortunately, they don't actually "flow" "correctly" the way storyboards are supposed to... So, there's sort of fragmented... if anything, they seem to "cut" much like a music video style of editing would....

But, I want this piece to flow just right. Its especially meaningful to me. Also, this scene is crucial to other plot pivoting points in the story line.

Here is the rough acrylic painting version I just recently did:

And, here's the boards as they currently are:

I will eventually need to redo them.... however, I don't have the music for it composed. I feel that I will NEED that music in order to create the piece effectively. I want a whole song/musical part.

I want a song that is similar to this style, but I want to have something totally new composed:

I want this scene to convey the free spirited fun-loving personality of Djehkäujaa, my dragon character. However, she sneaks away form the pack/flock of the other dragons, whom have become fundamentalist isolationists, whom would frown upon her inter-species relationships/friendships with "silly creatures".

Djehkäujaa's openness in playing with dolphins and other fun-loving playful creatures plays an important part in the story much later on in the story...

There's a reason why the dragons are so rigid and isolationist... but, their stubborn rigidness will backfire... there's a lot of backfiring in this story...

Frustrated Dragon

I've been tearing apart my home trying to find the original sketched of the ones I have the ugly inked versions of on my old portfolio model sheet.

I honestly HATE the inked versions. But, due to RULES that were supposedly animation industry standards at the time, we have to ink the work. I HATE HATE HATE my inked work.

Also, the instructors made me alter my inked work several times cutting out a lot of details.

Ironically, I still have a lot of model sheets from big companies back then that were rough, sketchy, or uninked work... and, by today's standards including Japan and even 3D or film effects anmiation they no longer have this idea that everything must be inked drawings.

I believe my instructors meant well... at the time, they believed in this ideas of a term they often used in the old Animation Magazines called either "anible" or "animable" depending on who was talking, and yes I sat through countless lectures and animation festivals... basically, it means "able to animate". The concept was that in order to animate something ( i.e. hand drawing traditional animation) that the artwork needed to be simplified. It makes total sense if you think about it, and gives you less work, so you can animate more. this was one of those Holy Grail ideas that people all echoed over & over... but, if you watched Don Bluth films, various Disney Films, and any number of untold independent shorts in any number of festivals, this rules was OFTEN BROKEN.

Yes, it takes a lot of work, and a lot more time, to do something by hand drawing if it has more details... I KNOW THAT. I UNDERSTAND THAT....

And, I "get it" that a potential employer would look at your portfolio and probably want a person whom can mass produce art that is simple, and not "waste time" on details.... but, at the same time, they ALSO want to see what your IDEAS ARE, HOW YOU THINK, and just HOW DETAILED AND SKILLED YOU CAN BE, or ACTUALLY ARE....

With all of the deadlines shoved onto me, and with so many restrictions, I felt I did rather well in meeting their demands... however, specific instructors whom had a visceral hate for women would just make up reasons to fail me.
When the other students had a portfolio done, it was common for other students to want a copy of it from the photo copier. Even my unfinished portfolios, and "failed" portfolios were SO sought after by my fellow students that they would ask me to copy it, in the classroom, even before the teacher even saw them, which might have pissed him off further.

And, whenever I gave a newer version copy to my favorite teacher, he would also make copies because everyone wanted a new copy of mine. And, in a stack of stapled copies of my 'failed" or "unfinished" portfolios would even get requests from other people, whom I didn't even know as either I was making copies, or that teacher.

However, in my opinion, all of the revisions to especially my BEST WORK actually made it less than good. I don;t like it at all.

I prefer my pencil work SO MUCH MORE.

I came to this realization even harder when I worked at Top Cow in 2005 (unpaid) because there were "pencilers", specifically 1 in particular at the time, whom refused to have his work inked, and drew his line work in such a way as to be ink-like. But, his work also had a nice feel to it. A common question was "Who did his inks? Does he do them himself?" because the work was so different looking... and the editor or producer would always strike up a conversation about how that artist refused inking or inkers and that the line work was entirely in pencil.

It was such a common conversation topic that I changed my mind on inking entirely. I was already working on "line quality"anyway... so, why bother with ink?

I also don't like digital inking tools. I HATE THEM.

Anyway, I don't know where some of my sketchbooks from 1999-2001 are because there's definitely many that are missing, and a number of portfolio folders with my punched "animation papers" in them.

I also lost my sculpture of Djehkäujaa.

1 thing I want to point out is that Djehkäujaa has segmented parts of her skin, such as her neck & tail.

My friend Silver Moon Nightwing (Kristen Buckner) often referred to my dragon as "mammalian" meaning "mammal-like". But, actually, I based a lot of her more on dinosaur anatomy/biology

I designed her to have tight yet very flexible skin, but also rough. The reason it's rough is because in flight it will cause micro turbulences, similar to how a golf ball works in flight, or the skin of a shark in water, that causes them to fly faster, in effect gliding better through the air.

Her skeletal structure is also cartilage and her wings are firm, yet also have a good amount of flex to them.

If you understand the anatomy of bones and skulls, and you understand how lips work or function you can somewhat accurately determine how large lips would be on an animal. There's holes in the skulls specifically FOR the nerves to reach the lips through the skull. It works like this: the larger the hole for the nerves to pass through the skull, the larger the lips will be.

If you look at the skull of a horse, you can see they have a large hole for the nerves, and they also have big lips. If you look at a moose, which has HUGE lips, it has an even bigger hole in the skull where the nerves come out. Canines and felines also have significant lips to grab onto the meat they need to consume.

I actually took a large interest in this because I sat through a lecture in the late 1990s describing how an Apatosaurus  actually have giant moose lips based on JUST the size of the hole in the skull for the nerves. I also noticed this on other dinosaur skulls as well, and even took a lot more notice of this on animals that were alive today.

That is why Djehkäujaa has large lips.

In some ways she has some dog-like and horse-like anatomy.

Regarding her "detailed look" I actually disagree. From my perspective, for ME, I have kept her very sleek and simplified FOR ME. She doesn't have grand scales, or tons of horns, or spikes. Despite the grand size, she's agile & nimble.

Her skin also has special abilities to change color or bend light becoming almost invisible. She has vision like an eagle, and posable thumbs. She can read, write, talk, sing, hum, and do many things a human could.

So, when it comes to animating her... I've seen it done many times... there's this THING called ROUGH ANIMATION, and KEY FRAMES.... maybe you've heard of it....

Then, later on, you can do something called CLEAN UP and REFINING...

In fact, most rough animations and keyframes, often get redone ANYWAY....

JUST SAYING....

I do NOT have a problem with trying to animate my own character. FFS have you EVER seen Glen Keane's BEAST character in a film called Beauty & The Beast? He didn't draw it all in 1 day... and other animators also worked on it WITH HIM.

So, calm the hell down.... it's GONNA BE OK...

I know people think they're somehow well-meaning, or that their somehow helping me, or giving me good advice...

I also don't talk about everything regarding her... because it's very extensive, and INSIDE OF MY HEAD... so, you just don't KNOW, and don't SEE all the work and effort, and consideration in it...

Or, there's the people whom think I'm an arrogant uppity person.... just based on something I wrote, and DON'T EVEN KNOW ME.

I already KNOW I'm not the best at everything... and that's not the point.

There is no such thing as a "best artist" only ur own PERSONAL BEST.

I might not be that great today, and certainly not MY BEST today... but, tomorrow is another day...
